Whittemore, Iowa
Whittemore is located in the western part of Kossuth County. The town was established in 1878 and is named for a Milwaukee Railroad engineer, Don Whittemore. The motto of the town is “Whittemore Cares More and Shares More”. The town features a municipal swimming pool, Noah’s Park, a community center, a 20’ x 40’ Betsy Ross style flag mural at the community center, a public library, and the county-owned “Siems Park” south of town.
There are a variety of annual events held in Whittemore. A two-day town celebration in June includes carnival rides and games, a bingo stand, and the American Legion’s “World Famous” grilled hamburgers. Other annual events include a community-sponsored Santa Claus Day, a Chili Cook Off, an Easter Egg Hunt, Halloween trick-or-treating, a fireman’s feather party, and the American Legion’s chicken barbecue and sweet corn feed featuring “Bossie Bingo”. Whittemore is home to the Kossuth County Freedom Rock, located on the west side of the American Legion Hall at 601 Broad Street.

Home to Kossuth County’s “Freedom Rock” painted by Artist Ray “Bubba” Sorensen and dedicated July 4, 2015, the famous “Freedom Rock” is located just west of the American Legion Hall at 605 Broad Street. The Kossuth rock features a depiction of the flag raising at Iwo Jima and the presentation of a US flag to a Gold Star Mother. Voted one of the “Top 10” Freedom Rocks in Iowa, a must-see on your “Rock Tour”! Schmitt Hardware, a modern-day business, affords persons entering the store the charm and atmosphere of a turn-of-the-century hardware store of 100+ years past. The store is featured in the 2022 movie, “Silent Night in Algona” and tourists and historians are welcome to visit during business hours. Siems Park is a county-owned camping and fishing hotspot, located just southeast of Whittemore. Lots of fun to be had for the outdoor enthusiast! Camping sites include electric hook-ups with a sanitary sewer dump on site (available April 1-November 1). Showers are now also available at the north end of the local campground. Noah’s Park contains the community’s playground filled with modern equipment and features a full-size ball diamond where members of the Whittemore Little League teams play “Home” games each year throughout the month of June! The park is also home to a beautifully maintained tribute to area soldiers and service men and women world-wide, and is known locally as our Veteran’s Memorial. In the fall of 2001, in remembrance of 9-11 and to show our true patriotic pride, members of the community painted a 20’x60’ Betsy Ross flag on the south side of the Whittemore Community Center, which is located in Noah’s Park. It is a one-of-a-kind display of an early flag in American history. J&J Custom Meats, the newest business in Whittemore, is a family owned, state-of-the-art, built-from-the-ground-up meat processing center. They process beef, pork and lamb and carry a variety of retail meats; now famous for their homemade bologna, jerky and sticks! During their first year in operation, they were awarded “Small Business of the Month” statewide by America’s Small Business Development Center Iowa (SBDC)!
