Kossuth’s County seat, Algona offers unique historical sites and museums, an array of restaurants and a thriving small business community. Start by stepping back into the days when Algona was the site of a WWII Prisoner of War Camp, with a visit to the POW Museum. This camp was “home” to a total of 10,000 German prisoners from April 1944 to February 1946. A movie based on these events, “Silent Night in Algona,” is set to be released in December 2022. During the holiday season visitors may tour the 60-piece Nativity Scene created by the German POWs, which is on display at the Kossuth County Fairgrounds. While in town, be sure to visit the Louis Sullivan Building, Kossuth County Historical Society, and Kossuth County Agriculture and Motorsports Museum. The Water’s Edge Nature Center and Smith Lake provides camping, fishing, swimming and more just north of town on Highway 169. Outdoor fun is also available at Algona’s many parks and, during the summer, the Algona Aquatic Center. Take a walk on the bike trail, a paved path that winds through a few miles of neighborhoods throughout the community. Hiking trails, camping and disc golf are all available at Ambrose A.
